I have been using a form of Read and Respond since I started teaching. Every year it evolves and improves. It's still not perfect, but I'm happy with its evolution. Read and Respond is a great way to encourage and hold students accountable for daily reading. I want my 5th graders to spend the bulk
of their homework time engrossed in books, so the response part I try to make as quick and painless as possible, while still being meaningful. This summer I updated the entire thing just in time for a new school year! I thought I'd put together a little video showing how easy it is to set up.

Do you think this product would work with 8th grade. My school doesn't use AR but I do want my students to read daily. I've been using a Reading Response Journal with a weekly prompt but I'm frustrated with the lack of effort by some of my students.

ReplyDeleteI encourage reading in my classroom by having the kids participate in 21st century book clubs. They LOVE it and are totally engaged. It's the best thing I've implemented yet! Thanks for sharing!!

DeleteOne thing that my team does is during our block time we run an extra book club. Block time is our time when kids get pulled out for remedial services. The students who are left get to choose which novel and teacher they want to be with. We have a mix of students from different classes. This year I had a group who was REALLY into Gary Paulson books. We read Hatchet, Brian's Winter, Brian's Hunt and Brian's Return.

ReplyDeleteWe encourage reading in our classroom by using an AR diploma system. They love to see if they met their goal and if their name is on the AR wall. =)
